How does USB import and export work (DTR67 and RTI90 set-top box range)?
Both the DTR67 and RTI90 set-top box range offer the im- and export of various files by using the USB port. Please check this thread to find out how it works.

I’m
happy to tell you about this feature
Both, the DTR67 and RTI90 range (software version 3.1.1) offer the file im- and export via a USB device. This will allow you to upload your favourite jpeg and mp3 files to the set-top box in order to use your TV screen as a big digital photo frame whilst listening to your playlist (or the radio channels).
Due to the vast amount of different USB key models we cannot guarantee the compatibility with all brands of USB keys but we have noticed that the majority of smaller USB keys (up to 8GB) seem to work fine. Should you experience any problems with your particular USB key please try again or use a different key to avoid potenatial compatibility problems.
THE MEDIA CENTRE:
Just plug your USB key into the front USB port of your set-top box. The unit now will recognise it and automatically open the media centre where you can open or save the files to the set-top box hard disk.
EXPORT RECORDINGS:
You can also use a USB device to export your old recordings to your computer to have more space for new programmes that you would like to record. This way you don't have to delete them but you can keep them stored on your computer for a later point of time. Please be advised that due to copyright reasons this is only possible with SD (Standard Definition) recordings.
Simply access the recording library and choose the recording that you would like to
export to your external device by pressing the green 'select' button. Then press the red 'options' button and select 'Video exportantion'. The unit now will export the recording to your USB device.
FOR RTI90 ONLY (not necessary on DVR67/DTR67 range):
Please download the 'XConverter' software from the suppot section on our website (http://www.sagemcomdigital.co.uk/set-...) to convert RTI90 recordings into a format that can be played on your computer (e.g.: via VLC Player). More instructions can be found on the website.
Kind regards,
Donald

POSTED BY TROULLY ON 06/07/2011:
On a separate issue (not sure if there is a thread for this), I noticed that v3.1.1 has the functionality to "import" and "export" video from/to a USB device. What type of video format does it recognise for import? I tried .avi files but they are not recognised. Also the export only supports SD recordings! the feature seems very beta - slow and dated to use [similar in response times to the early Guide functionality]. Why bother releasing such features with so minimal functionality and useability... I would suggest Sagemcom spends the time making sure core functions (like sound, guide useability - responsiveness, management of recordings - these are very basic) before introducing more...
good solution! good solution! (undo) view -1 more comments

You can import video .ts files but only if they are ones you have previously exported.
But the export process introduces flaws in the files with the result that they don't play well on external equipment, namely your PC. Luckily the import process undoes these flaws so you can at least archive files to external mass storage for later re-importing.
The question is, when this is fixed will it still recognise the older flawed files and correctly re-import them?
On a more general note if they are going to persist in calling it a Mediacentre they are going to have to expand the variety of files it will handle. At the moment you can only directly play mp3 and jpg files. They should at least expand this to mpg files and better. -

Dear Chris,
I can understand that this is quite a frustrating situation for you but being a manufacturer of TV recording devices we need to comply with various content protection guidelines. We therefore cannot allow the extraction of the recordings without using the specific USB export feature (which for example does not allow to export HD recordings).
I am sorry for the bad news and hope that you understand our position.
Kind regards,
Donald -

Chris - the only way I can think is to get a new sagemcom box and replace the drive with your old one and hope the drive is not a part of the old one that is broken. Sounds expensive, and still risky, unless your box is under warranty (2yrs minimum standard in EU now required as its electronics? or do sagemcom do even more?).. or maybe a 2nd hand machine of same/v.similar model?

Will the proposed software upgrade be available to DVTR67500T owners as well as the RT190 range?
-
Dear Bob, the software upgrade for the RTI90 range is not compatible for the DVR67 range. However, the previous DVR67 and DTR67 generation should already allow the export of recordings including the playback on a computer (via VLC player) so there should be no need for an upgrade. Kind regards, Donald

Hi, I'm having problems with the USB port on my Sagem HD Freeview Box (320GB version). I'm using a 16GB Sandisk Cruzer Blade USB drive. It is formatted to FAT32. But it isn't recognised by the set-top box. I'd like to transfer some of the movies on the box. Very frustrating!

Hi, I am using a 8Gb Sandisk Cruser Blade on my DVTR67500T and it appears to work OK. I got it from Currys at what appears to be half price (7.99) by reserving it on line and the picking it up from the store. Whilst agreeing, to a point, with Donald that there are many different brands and sizes of USB keys on the market over which Sagen do not have control some sort of mention should have been made in either the manual or on an online update that the machine does not like anything over 8Gb. In fact the whole 'manual' for this unit could do with a second look as it still states (On page 42) that automatic software updates are available, even though this is not going to happen as Sagem regard it as an 'old' model.
-
-
Hi Bob Oliver,
Thanks for your feedback here. I am sorry to hear from your USB key incompatibility and you are correct in that we should mention that there might be an increased incompatibility risk when using larger USB keys - this does not mean that the unit is incompatible to ANY 4GB+ device!
While this information is already shared in the Community we will also add the same information to our www.sagemcomdigital.co.uk section to make sure that other customers are also aware of it.
Regarding the second point I hope that you appreciate that we can only improve our ranges to a certain point when we have to start focusing on the next product ranges. Creating a new user manual just to highlight that there won't be any further software upgrades does not seem viable but of course I can see where you are coming from. The new manuals will therefore be more specific to rule out any misunderstanding.
Kind regards,
Donald -

Hello mjreilly71
In addition to Donald's reply i would like to ask you if your Sandisk USB drive has it's own power or does it need power via USB ?
It is important that your external hard drive is self powered as our set-top box cannot provide power to the external hard drive (as e.g. a computer would do) and thus will not recognise it otherwise.
Thanks & best regards

1I use a 60GB 2.5 IDE laptop harddrive for this, without external power and it works no problem. Just plug in the USB and away we go, but it HAS to be formatted to Fat32 to work. -

I am using a MyMemory 32GB USB Flash Drive from mymemory.co.uk it has the following speeds.
Write Speed: 15MB/s
Read Speed: 20MB/s
It works fine for me. cost was just 20.97 (delivered) so very cheap.
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/USB-Flash-D...
It does take about 10 minutes to export a 2 hour SD film, i dont know if this is the normal time? perhaps someone who has a 8gb stick can tell me how long it takes saving a 2 hour film as a comparison?
I do my exporting when have other jobs to do in house so not really a big problem. -

10 minutes sounds about right Gary, maybe a bit less with a hard drive.

Hello. I formatted my Samsung 500GB usb hdd into FAT32, & exported 2 films. They 'show up' on the DTR, but my PC cannot play them. I have VLC installed. Any ideas please?

Dear Adrian Cantrill
Thank you for posting on the Community.
With regards to this, can I ask if the files are displaying on the USB device?
There should be two files - a .TS (Mpeg4 video file) and also a VDBSAG file.
The second file is just the recording information should you wish to import it back onto the box.

Hi Marcus.
The files, (one long film split into two parts, and one of 1.5 hours duration), are shown as film recordings by the DTR box, but on the computer, Windows shows the drive as empty & wants to format it. VLC says it cannot open it.
Also, this might be a clue: strangely, after exporting these two films, the DTR says Used space is 77%! This is a Samsung S2 portable 500GB hdd. 77% =385GB??
I'm wondering if I've done something wrong when re-formatting from NFTS to FAT 32? It worked ok for data recovery on the PC.
Any advice much appreciated.
Kindest Regards,

Hi Adrian,
Thank you for your feedback.
I would suggest that if windows is unable to locate the files that it could indeed be a problem on the USB device.
Did you put any partitions on the USB hard disk? Does the hard disk have it's own file system?
With an external drive of this size I would recommend that you create Partitions on the Hard disk that are formatted in FAT32 during the partition process.
There are many applications available that can help you to do this as I think there may be problems trying to fully format a hard disk of this size.
I hope this helps.
Kindest Regards
Marcus -
-
I don't think the formatting or size of the drive is the problem, my 500GB Maxtor Basics has a single 500GB FAT32 partition, and copes without issue (except for not reporting the used space correctly). More likely the drive is demanding marginally more power than the pvr can provide, corrupting writes to the drive in the process. I would at least let Windows perform an error check on it.
Samsung drives specify 2.5W for writing for instance, which is absolutely the limit for usb powered devices. In theory it's within spec, in practice design tolerances will make particular combinations problematic, which I think is what's happening here. -
-
Hello again.
I can't find how to perform an error check, Windows just says "you need to format disk in drive G: before you can use it".
I'm wondering if there's another program I could download to analyse it? I've had no experience with this kind of problem.
Many thanks.
Adrian. -
-
Ah sorry, overlooked the bit about windows not recognising it. You could still do a sector check but it will take hours rather than minutes, and might be worthless if the DVR sees the drive ok. The problem might be with the PC sometimes not providing enough power to the drive. If your drive came with a y-cable for boosting the power via a second usb port you might try that on the pc. Come to think of it even a different USB port might be enough to make a difference.
-
-
Still no joy with VLC. Maybe it's that program, (haven't used it before, perhaps a faulty download)?
The device doesn't have anything other than a mini usb socket & usb link cable. I tried a different port, but this hdd came with Michael Jackson movie last year and that was ok. exported a couple of films from the Sagem but didn't play them then. I wiped these when I formatted it to NFTS to save data when the PC had a trojan attack. All that data reloaded ok.
Not had much experience of formatting. I used TOKIWA Fat 32 Formatter. It worked very quickly too. Could this have wiped the Samsung codes that control the drive?
Can these codes be restored?
I'd appreciate any advice in finding the source of the problem.
Many thanks.

Have you tried a re-format of the drive? Make sure its a full format, not quick format. Seems strange that the drive isn't recognised even formatted in FAT32. Can you re-import the films back to the PVR?
-
-
Hi Glen.
Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow. The Sagem's showing nearly full, but I could squeeze a bit back on. Can you recommend a reliable Fat32 Formatter please? -
-
I used the Tokiwa formatter on my 60GB drive, same as you and it works no problem. You also mentioned that you tried before to export and it didn't work, then formatted to NTFS, so i'm guessing now that a re-format would make no difference. Michael Jackson played ok, so the problem may not be a power issue to the drive from the PC... Hmmm...
-
-
I exported ok before but never re-imported it to the Sagem. I assumed it would work(!!??). I want to store about 100 films to play in my motorhome in Spain this winter. I had to dump the recordings to save the PC files when it crashed.
Strange this 'recognition' thing. Windows 'knows' it's a Samsung device & it says "device working properly", but it sees it as having no data. I'm using Vista so i guess that doesn't read FAT32. -
-
I use Vista too and it reads my FAT32 drive, just can't format it. Try an export/import...
-
-
Thanks Glen.
Going to bed now, so will have a go tomorrow. Will let you know results.
Goodnight!
Adrian. -

Update: I tried an import, but the Sagem says "HDD Full", (even though it's at 94% of a 160GB disc). Tried exporting a 1GB film, it says "Disk Full". Then I thought I'd try a short clip of 10min duration, that produced "Export Error".
I'm wondering if, as I had only done a 'Quick Format' from NFTS to FAT32, the old files are still 'visible' & causing the gross errors in memory availability?
I tried a full FAT32 Format, but Tokiwa sees it as this already.
Right! Now I've got Windows to "Restore Device Defaults" (ie: NFTS). That has taken all day, but at least I've got a starting point.
Next step is a full FAT32 format..........(!) -
-
Now the Tokiwa doesn't work!!!!!***????
Going to leave it before I throw it at the Sagem! -
-
Further update: Downloaded Verbatim FAT32 tool. Marvelous, it did it in seconds!
I found a strange thing - the films I couldn't get VLC to play showed as 'ghost' images on the Sagem in the Media section??
Next, I tried a 10min. clip exported to a 512MB usb key. Success! It played ok on the computer once I'd typed the file name correctly. It could not be re-imported, though. Got "Disk Full" message. Sagem HDD was at 94% & not in 'red zone'. Is this normal?
Tried usb hdd again - this time I 'sussed it' - When trying to export from the Sagem, I had been 'exporting' to HDD, (doh, should have selected usb!) I hour recording played ok on computer. Wow! Great stuff!
Sorry Sagemcom, the problem was my (mis-)understanding of the procedure, & looking for a fault that did not exist.
One thing though, can you advise the maximum % at which I can re-import films please? I'd much rather view on a proper TV, but want to save as many films as possible on the DVR's disc.
Thank you everyone for your help and patience.
Best Regards,
Adrian. -
-
Ah-ha, it all makes sense now! The media section of a 160GB DVR occupies about 10GB, which makes sense of the 77% full figure you had earlier, and the reason why it didn't show up on the USB drive. Though it doesn't explain why the pc didn't recognise the format.
I found that imports need temporary user space of 9GB before the import is allowed. This amounts in your case to some 6% of the available 150GB total user space, so 94% is just about on the cusp. I'd guess 93% could be the limit to still allow another import. -
-
Yep! That's all ok now. Importing from usb key and from portable hard drive. Whe-hey!! Recording like the clappers now, trying to get 100 films before I go South. Going to get a new telly with usb, so might be able to watch direct from the portable hard drive. If not I still have the PC option.
Anyway, thanks Marcus, pTd, and Glen Turner for helping me sort out my little 'problem'.
Best Regards
Adrian. -

Well done Adrian, pleased you managed to get it all sorted in the end...

I have a DTR6400/6700. I want to transfer a1.5Gb programe onto an 8GbUSB stick which is Formatted in FAT32 with a single partition.
The first time I tried to transfer, 3% completed before I got an Error message:
"Error duting transfer"
Now I get the same message whatever the size of the file to download.
What do I need to do? My disk is 85% full and I want to free some space by moving files onto other storage devices.

Dear Mike,
I have merged your post into this already existing master thread that deals with the export function. Please follow the advice given by Sagemcom and other customers and let us know if this has helped. Possibly yhis problem could be linked to the USB key that you have been using and another attempt with a different key might help.
To rule out problems with your particular unit you can always contact our experts directly on 08450 900 316 (local call rate) who will provide in-depth trouble-shooting.

1Hi Mike,
A good solution to this is to tune to a channel that isn't broadcasting a signal when you transfer files. I recommend using Channel Zero, but i'm sure others work too. -
-
Hi
Bought a new RTI90 500Gb last week which works OK but I have been unable to export anything to a USB stick. All the obvious things are OK (only SD recording, not bigger than 4Gb, USB stick formatted to FAT32 etc etc etc, software version 3.2.0 installed)
It looks like it is exporting and goes through the process, but aborts with an error and when I plug the USB stick into a PC it shows the filename but with 0 bytes. I've tried a range of USB sticks and a mains powered USB hard drive, none of which works.
My conclusion is that the box is very fussy about the make/type of USB sticks which it will work with, so can anyone tell me of a make and model of USB stick which they KNOW can be exported to (and have proved to work)
I phoned tech support and their only suggestions was to crash the box which given that it didn't bring the channels in in the right order and I had to manually add them I'm not prepared to do (and since it is only a week old don't see what good it would do anyway)
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
RTI90 USB export USB stick which works. -

Neil, all computers do the same thing - they write the data first, then the header file. As you are getting an error during transfer, the header file isn't being written to the USB so you end up with zero byte files.
Try tuning to a blank channel when you export to see if it helps. -
-
Hi Glen
Yes, the box throws up an error on screen along the lines of "there was an error during transfer@ and aborts - then when I look the header is there.
It is almost as if it is picking up the directory structure of the pen but not actually able to write to it - if I create folders on the pen on my computer I can see these on the Sagem, and if I create folders on the Sagem I can see these on the computer - it is the actual file writing which is failing, hence trying to find a make and model of USB stick which people have actually proven to work
Thanks
Neil -
-
PS : just tried again and the error message is "error during transfer".
After you try to export and get the error message, if you then try to export again it says there is no USB device inserted (even though there is) and the only way round it is to switch the box off and back on again..
Arghhhhhhhh-
I get this too, hope Sagemcom fix this bug for their newer hardware (and maybe a little faster exporting too please, better usb port spec/supporting chips or processing power to convert it maybe!?)
-
-
-
-
-
What kind of percentage are you getting before it fails? Is it the same every time or does it vary?
-
-
It is 0% all the time - never progresses and fails with the error usually within less than 30 seconds - pretty sure it must be it is not able to write to the format of the USB stick but it can write to the header/directory area (track 0 ?) on the pen
-
-
Can you play MP3 files from the USB sticks that it won't export to? If not maybe there is a more general USB fault with your box.
-
-
Considering that you've tried a range of sticks and hard drives, the only thing i can now suggest is a factory reset as it fails at 0% everytime. Seems like it just doesn't want to export regardless. You won't lose any recorded programs, but you'll lose your channels, any settings and recording timers.
Did the box come with 3.2 installed or did you manually do it? -
-
So, if I copy some photos on to the USB stick on my PC and plug the USB stick into the Sagem, then I can see all the folders I have created on the stick on the PC, and can open and view the JPEG images on the Sagem.
So it looks like there is no problem with the box or USB socket.
When I tried exporting to the USB stick this time, the saving message showed a progress of -1% (minus 1%) and there was a horizontal red bar right across to the extreme RHS of the screen and nothing else happened -
-
And the box had 3.2.0 on it when I bought it 2 weeks ago
Not prepared to do a factory default as all the channels came in in the wrong order (1,2 OK then jumped to 7, 9 - Channel 3, 4 were in the 800s) and had to do a manual channel search on all the different frequencies from Winter Hill or whatever they are to get the right channels in the right numbers and not going through that hassle again. -
-
I can't think why the other exports are only partially working, but the -1% condition can occur when the recording title has illegal FAT32 characters in it, typically a colon ':', but others can do it.
You will have to edit these out of the name before you can export them. The DVR series substitute with underlines automatically so it's not a problem for them.
Having a dot at the end of the name may also be a problem, but I've never tested this. -
-
... Or you could just take the box back to the shop for a refund...
-
Oh, where's the fun in that! :-)

Exactly pTd (bad idea Glen, very bad idea...)

As you suggested I contacted your technical department direct by telephone. It didn't do me any good though because we tried everything together that they asked me to try, but to no avail. We couldn't transfer a recorded program to the memory stick, we kept getting the message ERROR IN TRANSFER.
I also tried using an external self powered hard drive, formatted to fat 32, but this didn't work either and still got the same error message.
It also has two other faults which annoy me greatly.
If the box is on standby and recording a program and if you now want to watch a TV programme by switching on the box, it won't switch on, it boots-up to a certain extent and then hangs-up with the TV screen flashing blue on and off. It never gets to the stage of being able to watch a TV program or anything else.
Once the recording is finished the PVR boots normally. This is really annoying because we cannot watch TV while all this is going on.
I e-mailed your technical department about this problem a while ago but never received a reply. The fault is that when watching a recording and fast forward the program, when I resume play again, the sound is missing. To get the sound back I have to exit the recording completely and start all over again.
The PVR is connected using the HDMI lead and the problem seems to occur mainly when watching an HD program with surround sound.
I believe that all these problems have nothing to actually do with the box but rather the programming which has lots of bugs in it. Though you have tried to sort them out and brought out software updates, you have never managed to rectify all of the problems.
I am a very annoyed and disappointed customer of yours because I now hear that you are not going to update this box in anyway but instead concentrating on newer models thus leaving your loyal customers with a substandard product.
Previously, I had one of your analog PVRs for many years, it never gave me any trouble and I was very happy with it, because of this excellent service I thought that when I wanted a new digital PVR I would stick with SAGEM.
What are you going to do to help me and restore my faith in your company? -

Dear Paul,
This Community has been implemented to answer customer questions about our product range and to offer a certain level of trouble-shooting (e.g. instructions of how to deal with problems during the recording export etc).
Individual complaints should be directed directly to us so I would appreciate it if you could contact us directly. I am sure that we will find a solution.
Just to clarify one of our points in the general interest of this Community: we have never claimed that there won't be further updates for the RTI90 range. While we are not offering any new features we will continue to provide maintenance updates and we will keep the Community informed about the progress.
Thanks and kind regards,

OK, so over the holidays I have had the time to do a factory reset and, surprise surprise, made not the slightest difference - still get the "error during transfer" error after 0%. I can view the folder structure on the USB stick, can read and display pictures on the USB stick, so there is obviously some sort of firmware problem with the box.
Back to my original question - has anybody EVER managed to export from this box to a USB device, and what was the make and model of the USB device which worked.
Too late to take it back to Argos now - so Sagem, over to you to resolve or replace the box ....... -

CHAMP
1Neil, I've exported possibly more than a hundred recordings from the RTi90, imported far fewer, naturally, but I find nothing wrong with the basic process but for the acknowledged bugs (balking at colon characters in filenames, and re-conversion for playback on external devices).
My most basic device is a Sandisk Cruzer blade, 2GB, too small for routine exports but nevertheless works as intended, and is always used for software updates. My main device is a Maxtor Basics 500GB usb powered portable. This contains a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB 2.5" sata drive, and works very well indeed, except for a tendancy to go into sleep mode too eagerly.
Can I suggest an experiment to narrow down the source of the problem? Try copying a jpg file already on the usb stick, but using the RTi. You should be able to create an identical file with a modified name from the file menu. If you can then display this copy as normal it will show the basic read/write process is ok, and presumably therefore the stick is compatible. I'm clutching at straws here as I'm not sure what the next step might be.-
Hi there. Tried copying (and moving) a JPG on the USB stick and it throws a wobbler (doesn't generate an error but doesn't complete the copy or move and just returns to the channel which is on when you try the copy)
There are empty (zero byte) files on the USB stick for the JPG which I tried to copy/move, and also for the recordings I have tried to export so it looks like it is putting down the filename etc in the directory structure but not physically able to write to the USB stick.
Will try buying a Cruzer blade if I can find one - I already have an 8Gb version and am pretty sure it doesn't work but will try again once I have rebooted the machine - Once it generates the error it also seems to lock out the USB port and I have to reboot the PVR to get it to see anything in the USB socket again -
-
Just tried the 8Gb Cruzer Blade and the box looks like it is picking it up, then just fails back to the broadcast channel which was on prior to plugging it in, so it isn't seeing it at all

Hi Neil,
Can you go through the exact process you are doing before the error happens?-
Hi Glen
Select the recording I want to export (select option) then options, then video exportation (sic) - navigate to the USB (doesn't matter if i create a directory or use an existing one), click OK - get a export in progress message with 0% and a status bar and then after a short period of time ( message.
Single word recording name with no apostrophe or any other punctuation .... -

As it was definitely not a golf morning, thought I'd play with the export function on my RT190. I can report that the converter works just fine using Wine on my Linux Mint 12 test system. The one hour program exported as a 2.2GB file to my 4GB memory stick so I had to move it to a disk with more space available as the converter saves the converted file to the same location as the original file - two 2.2GB files don't fit on a 4GB stick... Conversion was fast, I didn't time it, but it seemed only about 5 minutes. Quick rename to .mp4 and job done!
Plays well in VLC (and even in Mint's default movie player, a thing called "Totem Movie Player" which rather bizarrely seems to default to displaying with subtitles).
Very impressive.-
Thanks for the positive feedback OldClicker, I am glad to hear of your successful export :-) Kind regards, Donald

Just a pity that it isn't as impressive or straightforward on standard platforms though :-)

Bit more info ..... now tried a different USB stick (an old 1Gb thing) and the box transferred over a 640Mb recording of Hollyoaks fine with no errors or anything
So as I suspected it is just that the Sagem is incredibly flaky with what it will record to - this is about the 4th device I have tried (and probably the oldest) so am assuming that the firmware can't cope with certain USB sticks
BUT
when I opened the .ts file, it started to play the programme but there was no sound and the picture was breaking up and terribly pixelated
I'm not sure if this is because the default application is not the correct one - any suggestions for what software is required to play the recordings back (Mac OS) -
-
Hi Neil,
Finally sorted?
The old 67 series used to export two files - one is the .TS file and another is the . VDBSAG file, which holds all the key info about channel, date, prog info etc. The RT series now interpolates this file into the .TS file, which needs to be removed before you can view it on your MAC (thats what causes the pixellation). You can get the converter from Sagem but I'm not sure of the link, maybe Donald or pTd can point you in the direction?- view 2 more comments

Ah, didn't realise you were a Mac user.
The software comes from Sagemcom so they would have to provide a Mac version. -

Tried emailing "support" to be told they don't have a Mac version. I emailed back (3 times) to enquire why they felt it was inappropriate to support Macs but haven't had the courtesy of a reply....

Thanks Glen
That's useful. It works in so far as I can copy files off, but since the only USB stick I have managed to get working so far is 1Gb and most recordings are significantly larger than that it doesn't move me too much further forward.
I've reserved one of the 2Gb Cruzer blades which someone said they had got to work (my 8Gb version of it won't play) so will see if that fares any better tomorrow and report back.....- view 2 more comments

1I use a 2.5" hard drive to export stuff, a 4GB Cruzer blade and i can also use my Sony Ericsson W995 phone too, so it's pretty stumping why your machine is so particular about what gets plugged into it... Anyway, pleased you've (nearly) got it sorted but at least you know now where the problem lies. -

My Sagem DTR67250T 250GB incorrectly complains the external USB hard disk is full when it is only 60% full. Due to this I can no longer export any recording from the DTR to the external USB hard disk.
The usage of the external USB hard disk has been continuing to be reported by the DTR to be increasing despite I have deleted 50GB of programmes from it, and now it is reporting the external USB hard disk to be full after my last export. I have also renamed the external USB hard disk to a different name but it did not work either.
Details of the hardware are:
Firmware version on DTR: 1.0.04MH
External USB hard disk - LaCie 250GB external USB hard disk
Any idea what caused this and how to fix it?

Hi KLC,
We have merged your question into this already existing thread. Please read the other comments as they are very helpful.

Hi KLC,
Have you tried to defragment the drive? -

Latest update on my efforts to get the USB export function to work.
Bought 2 brand new USB sticks this morning - a USB Cruzer Edge 2Gb and an HP 4gb. Out of the packet, neither worked and generated the usual error
Formatted the HP one on a PC as FAT32 (full format) and still no joy.
Copied some pictures onto the newly formatted HP stick (from the Mac) and could view these on the PVR and copy them into a new folder created on the PVR
Tried exporting a recording - again no joy if you try and save it to the top level of the USB stick BUT, if you try and save it into the folder created by the PVR it DOES work......Once it seems to have written to the device once it seems to be OK and you can right to the top level of the pen thereafter.
I've also discovered that if you try and export a recording which is bigger than the amount of space available on the USB stick, rather than something sensible happening like an error message telling you there isn't enough space, what happens is that the recording appears to start then you get a "-1%" progress bar which then hangs and you have to reboot the machine.
"All" I have to do now is
a) work out how I can actually watch the recordings since the .TS file is not viewable
b)work out how to export HD recordings which just throw an error all the time saying only SD recordings can be exported for no obvious reason (it isn't a size issue as I can export a large SD recording but not a small HD one)
So what are my conclusions ?
Well describing the firmware as flaky would be so generous as to be inaccurate - it certainly seems to be very iffy about the type of USB drive being used, how it is formatted and the directory structure used on it.
The UI is also pretty poor with no real error trapping or even basic attempts to make it user friendly.
It looks very much like a rushed job to release it with no real testing or user feedback. I gather this device is no longer being supported so I won't hold my breath for a more stable or user friendly interface any time soon (or ever)
I had an old Sagem PVR which served me faultlessly for many years so bought this one as a direct replacement and I have to say that my overall experience has been very poor. Apart from the issues of the USB export, the UI is appalling with delays of several seconds between pushing a button on the remote and anything happening on the screen; the menu interface is at best clunky and counter intuitive and you have to jump all over the place in the menu structure to complete even the most basic of tasks.
Fingers crossed that this HP pen keeps working OK and I can find a way of getting the recordings into a watchable format. -
-
Well you can forget HD export, it's forbidden by the Freeview elves. :-(
Not to mention 4GB file size limits for FAT32. -
-
Thanks - explains why there is the error for HD. On my old Sagem box there was the facility to split a record into 2 (or more) bits so was hoping I could do that if there were any recordings over that size but I haven't been able to find it yet (if it exists)
And in answer to your earlier (now deleted) comment - the Windows download for the file conversion utility won't run on a Mac (in the same way that no Windows applications will run on a Mac unless you have a Windows emulator on, which is a bit like putting a Ford Fiesta engine in a Ferrari).
I do have an old Windows laptop that I use for certain things that there isn't a Mac version of so I could go down that road, but the main driver for wanting to export recordings was to watch them on iPad etc while travelling so it would solve a lot of data transferring if there was a Mac version of it.
I've tried a few video conversion utilities which claim they convert .TS files into various formats but none of them will convert the Sagem files, but do convert other .TS files (e.g. from a DVD) so my assumption is that the .TS files which the Sagem records do not adhere to the normal file protocols and are a Sagem flavour of .TS rather than actual .TS, which is a bit naughty - and hence why they have had to produce a converter for a standard file format. -
-
No export for HD I'm afraid.
You can still access that menu if you go roughly halfway through a recording and press pause, info, OK, cut. From there you can specify "in two parts".
Once the Sagem .TS files are converted then they should play on your iPad no problem.-
Thanks Glen. Yes they play OK (on the Mac at least using some shareware called VLC) but not in Quicktime. Unfortunately Sagem don't provide a Mac version of the conversion tool, so I have to copy the file onto a USB stick, copy it to a PC hard disk, convert it, save it back to a USB stick, then copy it on to the Mac - tedious and pointless but at least it (so far, seems to) work.
None of the standard video conversion packages will touch it, even in converted format, so there is no way of getting it into MOV, or changing the screen resolution to make it iPad or iPhone format. -

-
-
-
Yes, as Glen says it's exactly the same menu, but it's disallowed during recording. Perhaps your old Sagem was from the original PVR series, which allowed editing anytime.
The exports aren't a Sagem flavour, they're simply corrupt. Not deliberately but as an unavoidable side effect of the programming interface, as I see it. It makes no sense to deliberately export a modified file format and at the same time release software to correct it, surely?- view 4 more comments

Whilst I am in rant mode, I'll also add that the date and time stamp on the files which the box export show as 1988, which is pretty impressive - or is it just that the firmware is 25 years old :-)
-
-
Same here on Vista. I think it's simply that the files are not date stamped, so it's probably an interpretation of a blank entry. Used to get this kind of thing in the good old bad old days of DOS, where similar blank entries are interpreted as 1980-01-01 or similar.

Can a converted file be imported back into the RT? Or only the original (flawed) file? I've never tried...

Hi Glen,
You need the original file if you want to import it back into the RTI90.

I have some movies on my Kingston 8gb memory stick that I would like to watch on my TV. I have converted them to AVI and MPG but when I plug my stick in it recognises the folder I've put the movies in, but not the movies themselves.
Is there a way I can view these movies as I'm disabled and can't sit at a computer for the length of the movies?

1Afraid not Steve, DTRs won't play or import external recordings. If you have a relatively recent DVD player or even TV they might be equipped with a suitable usb port for direct playback. -
-
Thanks pTd... Funny how the Ferguson F101 will allow it, only problem with that is it won't record. I have the Sagem in my bedroom so that when I'm ill I always have something of interest I can watch... Oh well, I guess I'll have to swap them around as and when I need to. Thanks again

Hmmm.... Quick answer, I don't know. I'll try over the weekend and let you know. I know it plays avi & mpg and it has a file read facility that has picked up the odd document I've saved onto the stick for safe keeping. Like I say, give me a couple of days and I'll come back to you.

I've managed to export files of television programs successfully to a USB device, and played the files back on my netbook using VLC. I then deleted these files from the USB device, and loaded the empty USB device into the Sagemcom recorder to export more files. I then got the message - 'disk full', even though I deleted the relevant files from the USB disk. Any comments?

1I suspect some form of directory cacheing is used while it accesses the usb device, which may not be properly updated when you makes changes externally. I know you might expect this to be discarded when you remove the device, but it seems to stubbornly hang on to it. It's probably better to delete via the DVR instead. The only sure alternative is a standby cycle to reset the usb interface. -
-
pTd is right as usual - an off/on on the DTR and a quick format of the USB should clear the pipes...
-
-
We-ll, not sure if a re-format is necessary, as it's not the device which is at fault. But certailnly, standby should clearout the old directory cache from the dvr memory.
-
-
Thanks for the advice, I've worked out how to delete the files on the USB using the keys on the DVR, however I couldn't find instructions on how to re-format the USB or to reset the USB interface by turning the DVR off then on and again. Do I reformat the USB on another computer?
-
-
CHAMP
1Putting the machine through a standby cycle to clear the usb interface is very much a user solution to what is really a usb bug. It shouldn't really be necessary, and usually isn't provided all write access is done by the DVR, including deleting. So it's not an instruction you'd expect to find in the manual.
If you really want to re-format the usb drive (though again I don't think it's necessary), you have to do it on a PC.- view 2 more comments
