RTI90 - 'Disk Full' message despite free harddisk space

Two or three users have reported that the drive shows as full at ~93% used. I similarly have two machines which currently show full at 65% and 75%. (My own belief is that it is related to buffer recording. I think the lost space is the unused fragments of buffer left over when converting to a normal recording).

This, naturally enough, prevents booked recordings from starting up. But curiously it still allows manual recordings to start (though deleting a small file is necessary to kick off), and if you start on the same channel that a timed recording is due to start on, the timed recording will take over from the manual one. This does tend to push the used space limit up gradually, but sadly when the recording is deleted the original limit returns.

I've also tried making many extended manual recordings of HD channels of 4-8 hours at a time in an attempt to quickly acquire the lost space. This gradually pushed the used limit up in stages of 3-6% at a time, eventually reaching 99%. I was hopeful that when these were then deleted the used space would be recovered, but that didn't happen. The original limits of 65% and 75% returned.

I hope this information is useful in providing a fix for this problem, hopefully one that does not involve re-formatting the drive.

I have had my box upto 97% full and have not had any box full messages at all. I have never imported via USB on to my box (only export) and was wondering if those that have had this problem have used the import function?
good solution! good solution! (undo) view 2 more comments

Very little importing, just enough to verify that it works. Have you done much buffer recording, especially prior to v311? I'm predicting no if my theory holds water. Edit

Have never USB imported and not sure what buffer recording is so probably not! What I do know is that since v3.1.1 my box is now telling me it's full at between 82% and 86%. have deleted loads of stuff and have not been able to replace it with the same volume of recordings.

The live buffer is the temporary recording of live tv that allows you to pause or live rewind for up to two hours, then continue watching deferred. You can make this buffer into a permanent recording by rewinding and pressing record. In a sense you are recording from the live buffer, hence, buffer record (aka back-record, retro-record) but really it's just being converted to a normal recording.

The reason I suspect this might be the cause is that on older software versions it appeared that the whole buffer (either 8GB or 16GB, not sure which) got stored even though only a small part of it was used for the programme. So over time there may be many large buffer fragments lost in the system which somehow never got released to user space.

I've actually had some success at recovering lost space by allowing a manual record to run non-stop for several hours. The disk full message doesn't seem to occur here. I'm currently up to 92% on one box which was halting at about 75%. Is it possible that a manual record is able to 'find' the lost buffer space but the timer slots can't? That's surely nonsense, but it seems to be working.

    This is all complete guesswork.

I have only done a live buffer recording once, I think it was on 3.1.1 but not totally sure (it was of itunes festival).

Main bug is definatley now the fact that the box is losing capacity. Since new update I have been getting "the hdd is full" messages. Started at 94% and am now at 85% and box is telling me it's full up! Sagecom please resolve this ASAP as we are losing capacity therefore meaning we are losing any space for new recordings

This has been happening to us recently. We were at about 55% when it started and we deleted programmes to get it down to 37% and it started again when we got back up to 40%. Of course we have the usual problem of it missing scheduled recordings and freezing.

I don't seem to have this problem since my box regularly goes to 97%+ and is fine.
I used live buffer quite a bit on previous versions and 3.1.1 although I did have to format the drive on an earlier software version (2.2.0) due to the folder bug so maybe that removed some buggy remnants of recordings from earlier versions.

Earlier I buffer recorded a show and it was listed as 2432MB in the recording list. When I deleted it the free space on the hard drive went from 7.73GB to 21.09GB so I guess my box is storing then deleting the whole buffer.

(Just thinking the folder bug hasn't returned has it? You all haven't been creating your own folders have you? Mine are all automatically created by series link...)

  • That is really useful information ilowman, cheers. It confirms my suspicions about how old this problem might be. I've been using buffer record since day one and I've never been competely confident that it had been handled correctly; my lost space could easily stem from recordings earlier than version 2.2.0. If everyone else with the problem can identify with that situation it pretty much nails the cause.

Given that you still buffer record without problem I'm more confident that there isn't an issue with it now, but that still leaves the problem of recovering the lost space. Re-format is a last resort, given I have a few HD recordings I'd like to keep a little longer.

If anyone, especially Sagemcom, can come up with a non-format recovery scheme, even if unweildy, I'd like to hear it. Now, if we had HD export ....

This capacity issue has only been an issue since the latest update. Reformatting is not an option as far as I'm concerned. The point of his hard drive is to keep existing recordings. Sagemcom, this issue has been caused by he last update and really needs fixing ASAP.

Thanks, please update us as to the progress and expected fix date.

    Dear all,

Just to reassure you that we are working on this issue!

However, similar to ilowman we have not managed to reproduce this issue in our test labs. We would therefore appreciate if one of you would be willing to have their unit collected in exchange of a replacement unit and warranty extension (+ 6 months). Having an affected unit in our R&D lab will significantly improve the speed of fixing this issue.

If this is the case, please contact me on service.uk@sagemcom.com

Thanks again for your great support.

    Kind regards,

    Donald

Recently got my box up to 99% full with only 10 min of HD space remaining, so definately not experiancing this issue at the moment.

  • There is also a problem with import/export sizes which might be more significant. I've recently noticed that importing a file can increase the used space figure in the hdd info page by approx. 9GB, even for the smallest of files. I've demonstrated this to myself with minimal 30sec recordings of 32MB. The size in List though still correctly shows 32MB.

As I said earlier I've done negligible importing so it can't be the problem. Well it might be if it was used more often. But I've done maybe a hundred more exports. Is it possible that the export process itself uses a temporary working buffer of 9GB, which remains, possibly even after the file is deleted?

Not sure if related to this issue, but yesterday I recorded about 3 minutes of buffer and 20 minutes forward on ITV1 HD. I didn't notice the size of the file, but when I deleted it freed up 5% of disc space.
